USA 2019/2020 Alaska Fairbanks Jan 17- 18

ALASKA - Fairbanks (cont)

Friday Jan 17
3/4 get up for breakfast
Zozo is nogo
Sunrise is LATE so teh light when we rise is eerily bright as it reflects off the snow.  Think its moonlight?  OR maybe sunlight?  Or maybe both?

French toast, maple syrup, bagels, tea and other stuff.
And THE OWL

Day trip to Chena hot springs is next
Nice drive for a nap!

Not sure what to expect
Bathers have travelled the USA for this day

Get towels, get changed. Walk through indoor pool / hot tub area
Open the door to walk down a pavement to the hot pool.   The walk is not warm!

Hot pool is magic.  Steamy and warm with patches of very hot.
Vapour from the surface blows by and sometimes visibility approaches nil.
Where is everyone?
Hair slowly forms slinks of ice
Can tap on my head and the ice will crack.

The sulphur will tarnish jewellery that isn’t gold or silver.
One of Ree’s rings is now black.

Out we get
Time for the ice museum
Appletini from an ice glass anyone?   Ree.
Silly ice hotel rooms that are $600 per night.  You pay then not the other way around.

Some discussion then back to the pool
Toes, fingers and lips screaming with cold just from the ice museum to the pool.
Pool is even better this time
Misty

Met some folk from Florida - mother gynae and daughter ICU nurse. Mum votes for Trump.
Another guy who had put in the window at our hotel cabin.
Super relaxing. Super warm.  Why ever leave.

We left

Thai dinner in a really cold Resaurant.
Food was nice, warm tea when we arrived was even nicer.
Drew’s pineapple fried rice was the winner.

Back at the cabin L and Z have a "little lie down".
A and D head up to the main lodge to join in Kory’s Aurora tour.
In the Yurk, few games and a better view of the lights than the night before.

The phone did ring at the cabin to see if L/Z wanted to come and see but they were not conscious.
If a phone rings in an Alaskan wilderness and nobody hears it, does it really ring?
Life is a choice.

Sat Jan 18
Breakfast at a taste of Alaska.
Lily is Kory’s wife.
Science experiments - hot water turns to ice before it hits the ground.   Well almost instantly.  Normal speed and slo-mo.

Time to snow mobile
Very cold even when fitted out
Two doubles - drivers AJ and Zozo.  Both did very well
Drew’s face mask kept fogging.  Asked a couple of times for assistance. No real help from helper Tyler. Try lifting the visor?
Very cold remember.
Turning a corner.  Oops. Hit a lil tree.
All are fine.  $few  damage.
Could have been worse +++.
Drew felt very bad but foggy plus cold = easy mistake.  All moved on.
In retrospect we shouldnt have paid the fine but all were a bit shook and freezing, as in literally freezing!

Car to road to car park again back to lodge - where is Rees phone?    It’s in the “abyss”” between seat and middle console.  Glad we found that!

A few returns of balaclava, gloves etc to Wal-mart and sportsman’s warehouse.
Stopover in Barnes and noble.

Springfield suites for one night so as closer to train.
Cute gift shop across the road
Antler onesie - easy to change the size later
LD spends time at sports store - so much stuff.  Guns!

Kids dropped off then off to see the antler arch and to get nice coffee and salmon quiche snack from roaster store mmmmmm coffee.

Definitely not warm outside!  Minus 30 ish.

Soba - a Moldovan restaurant.
Actually really nice.  Even the music.
 OK - mostly the food.
Entrees included pastries with filling and rolled eggplant with creamy filling and spicy carrots.  Delicious.
They call it the mother in laws tongue coz it looks a bit like tongue and it’s got a very sharp bite!

Last returns of gloves and hat to Fred Meyers, fill the car and return it to the airport.
Toyota Highlander - we will miss you.  So much better than the previous Dodge from Phoenix to SFO.

Tomorrow is an early start for a 12 hour train trip from Fairbanks to Anchorage.
We're gonna be anchored down in Anchorage
