Leaving Dubrovnik - a nervous trip to the ferry check-in

We are sad to be leaving Dubrovnik.

Easier going downstairs

The Croatians sound harsh, in particular, the women sound like cross Russians when they talk in English BUT we have found as a big generalization that they are friendly, interested and interesting. They are also, and it's very noticeable after Italy, polite and helpful. Croatians stop their cars for you even if you aren't waiting by a pedestrian crossing (even bus drivers). If you look lost someone stops and asks if you need help and then, get this, actually help.

Sunset at Placa Stradum (main street of old Dubrovnik)

It's hard to imagine the war of 1991 - 1995 occurred here (as in the photo above). There are pictures of the shelling of the old city (only civilians within) which are quite disturbing. Still, as per "the wall now protected by John Snow, the old walls of Dubrovnik withstood as many as 2000 modern shells fired from the local hill with shells looking up to as we kayaked around the city.

Ferry departure.

Still scarred by our last effort, we arrived at the Port at 7:23 for our 22:00 ferry. We were fully checked in by 7:24!

We are shocked by the ease and all our nervous energy, now unspent, may build Vesuvius like for a good shout at Drew's next misdemeanor. Better be good running paths in Venice!

Quick coffee at the relatively drab Hotel Oteka which, like much of Dubrovnik, turns out to have a whole lot of charm. Lovely waitress who makes Drew a specky hot chocolate, as a trio of saxophone, guitars double bass played in the background. We had a bit of fruit before we board for Bari and day of train travel.

The itinerary got a bit mucked up after we had purchased tickets all those months ago due to our ignorance and obsessive desire to lock in cabins etc. If we had booked yesterday, we probably would have take an Italian ferry direct to Venice or at least to Ancona and saved hours of trains.

Schedule

Ferry to Bari: Leaves 22:00, arrives 8:00

Train: Bari to Ancona, Ancona to Bologna, Bologna to Venice.

Car for 1 hour round the back of Venice to Vela Blu - a kind of camping ground thing where we stay in a caravan and the kids hopefully get to hang out with other kids instead of their uptight parents (not of the other kids).

So its pretty much a travel day and hopefully a good time for the kids to catch up on a bit of maths (they do some everyday / most days), a bit of blog and maybe a tad of watching a movie or playing a video game. It's been a busy month and a bit of brain free time is looked forward to.

Sunset from Fort Imperial

Enough
